As a prototype designer (m/f), you are at the heart of what we do: realising technically progressive devices or components which offer new solutions in today’s world, or improve old ones. Starting with the specifications and project requirements, you work in close collaboration with engineers to create concrete constructions from concepts that meet all the demands on functionality, production, quality and costs.
Your main tool is CAD programs, which you use to develop three-dimensional construction plans that cover all specifications – from materials to amounts and sizes, from tolerances to surface constitutions. Based on these documents, you create a prototype to prove if all the requirements have been met. In the end, you finalise the drawings and, together with the technical documentation, production data and parts list, put the prototype into series production. From here, they go out into the world as highly functional devices or components and fit the purpose for which they were constructed.
What you do
Prototype designers develop and construct individual components and assembly groups for devices, machines and systems, as well as tools and instruments for production. You handle orders, product specifications or parts of projects. You generate production, installation and testing documents and develop the required production data. For the company and the maintenance of the product, you generate the respective instructions and documentation.
Depending on the training location, the focus of the vocational training is on at least one of the following fields:
- Project planning and project processing
- Electrical and electronic units
- Construction of production components
- Mechanical units
- Systems and machines
- Apprenticeship support
The four-year in-company apprenticeship is divided into basic, supplementary and advanced training:
- The basic training lays the foundation for a broadly diversified career and is completed with an examination.
- The supplementary training covers the needs of preparation for the advanced training in various disciplines.
- The advanced training takes place in at least one of disciplines and lasts at least six months per discipline.
The training at the vocational college consists of two levels – “Basic Requirements” (G) and “Advanced Requirements” (E). The vocational school prepares you for professional certification.
