The Italian Army operates three Dornier 228-212 from their site at Viterbo airfield northwest of Rome. The aircraft currently fly a total of 1,400 hours annually, performing a diverse range of missions including paratrooper training, pilot instruction and personnel and cargo transport. RUAG Aviation supports Italian Army Aviation by delivering integrated technical and logistic support. This comprises full maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), complete material supply chain and documentation management services as well as technical support.
80% availability is guaranteed by RUAG Aviation for each of Italian Army Aviation’s three Dornier 228 aircraft. This is achieved through the placement of two RUAG Aviation specialists at Viterbo airfield, enabling them to perform all inspections on-site. Only major annual inspections are carried out at RUAG Aviation’s site in Munich-Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.
“We were first approached in the early 2000s, when Italian Army Aviation’s increased use of their Dornier 228 aircraft led them to engage RUAG Aviation’s expertise and support,“ says Oliver Parduhn, Director Programs Dornier 228 at RUAG Aviation. “We are proud that 10 years on, the Italian Army continues to trust us with improving the quality of their 28° Tucano Flight Group.”
