RUAG Sells Locarno Site to AeLo Maintenance

Berne/Locarno, 8 January 2020. RUAG is selling its Locarno site to the newly established company AeLo Maintenance SA, whose majority shareholder is Alsa Aero Locarno SA, also operating at Locarno airport, which takes the opportunity to expand its activities in the field of maintenance. With this step, the MRO Switzerland division further focuses on its core competencies in the field of defence technology....

With the sale of the Locarno site to AeLo Maintenance SA, RUAG MRO Switzerland (formerly RUAG Aviation and RUAG Defence) is seeking to focus on its core competencies in defence technology. The Locarno site, with its operations geared to civil aviation – particularly the maintenance of propeller-driven aeroplanes – following the Federal council’s decisions regarding the unbundling and the new objectives, no longer fits with the strategic focus of RUAG MRO Switzerland. All staff will either switch to the new owner or remain employed at RUAG in Ticino. RUAG MRO Switzerland retains a presence in southern Switzerland with its Lodrino site, which employs around 100 staff (including 12 apprentices) and mainly carries out maintenance, repair and overhaul work on propeller aircraft for the Swiss Air Force.

The sale to AeLo Maintenance ensures continuity for customers and partners. Enzo Giannini, General Manager for the Lodrino and Locarno sites, emphasises this: "The close connection between the newly established AeLo Maintenance and Alsa Aero Locarno – hitherto our direct neighbour and ally – provides customers, partners and employees with the assurance that maintenance services can continue to be offered in the usual scope."

Stefano Buratti, Chairman of both AeLo Maintenance and Alsa Aero Locarno, is pleased with the change: "With Alsa Aero Locarno we are already one of Switzerland's top five providers of pilot training. In parallel with this, we will now expand our maintenance activities with AeLo Maintenance by taking over the work of RUAG MRO Switzerland at Locarno airport."
